I have run into the same thing with a lot of the companies I work with. Many of my client’s reasons behind wanting to use particular software is because it was recommended by a friend or colleague. It seems easier for people to go with what they have been told, rather than evaluating what will best suit their business’ needs.

Phil,

Thanks for the comments and tip about a "complete" mass notification system -- I can certainly see the value in broadcasting a message to people in hearing distance of a particular location (or set of locations). On the same token, the government's Emergency Broadcast System performs a similar role though it does require one to have a radio or television to get the message.

The purpose of the system I mentioned, however, I don't think is to specifically warn a group of people, but to notify those who will respond to an emergency... i.e., the first responders to an accident, administrators of a school facility, managers at a corporation... replacing the error-prone "phone tree" systems of old. This ENS is of course much more sophisticated with its ability to communicate via so many different devices, and is automated, so that one person being asleep, not answering their phone, etc. doesn't keep the whole system from working.

What you refer to as a mass notification system requires the "receiver" of information to have possession of a piece of equipment which is in good working order to receive the warning. A truly complete mass notification system would include a loud and effective public address system which could broadcast a live voice message or pre-recorded voice message for all in an area to hear. To get one's attention, the voice message would actually follow a siren tone. Companies like Whelen Engineering have been making these products for decades to warn people of a natural or man-made disaster like a tornado, hurricane or tsunami as well as a haz-mat situation.

There is no requirement for anyone to have a cell phone, computer, telephone or pager to receive this type of warning information and it works even when there is a power outage because it operates on batteries that can be charged by solar panels.

Thanks for keeping the site updated all the time and I wanted to let you know that there is a company that configured my MAS 90 in San Diego that I am very very happy with. The company name is Barsa and it can be found at http://www.barsaco.com . The person that I dealt with is Jo and they were fantastic about sizing the application and working through my specific needs.

If you're a local yourself, then fine.

But be very careful. When you're on a local's turf, you may be expected to play by the locals' rules, which may be slanted in their favor.

Sometimes a national realtor might be more apt to play by national rules.

Of course, the closer you get to Boston, the safer you're inclined to be.
